免疫とは?-What's immune system?

Hello! It's Mariko again.

It's getting colder day by day here in Japan.

For me, something gradually changing is beautiful so I love to feel the beauty of the change like catching the cultural influences when we travel overland, or animal's development (of course includes human beings) by aging or experiences. There're a lot of things like that and the season is one of that.

Although, if you can't enjoy "the change", it can be a stress. I see some people who caught a cold around me lately.

Let's think about the immune system today.

We often hear "dropped immune function" or "increase immunity" but what's the "immune system"?

Simply it's a system of defense which removes harmful substances from our body.

Immune system doesn't work properly when we have excessed stress. Stress means not only irritated mind condition but also unorganized lifestyle or environmental changes like uncomfortable temperature, air pressure and/or humidity are included.

A key to the good status of the immune system can be the good balance of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which is composed by Sympathetic Nervous System and Parasympathetic Nervous System.

The good balance of these 2 nerves means good condition of Autonomic Nervous system, and it can be one of the cause making the "Homeostasis".

Sympathetic Nervous System makes our physical ability active mainly during the day.

It increases the blood pressure and blood sugar, and sends the blood to the skeletal muscles and brain.

Parasympathetic Nervous System recovers our physical body as it works conversely against Sympathetic Nervous System. Parasympathetic Nervous System is active mainly during the night or when we relax. It sends our blood to the inner organs to make their function better, and regulate our immune system to recover our cells properly.

What happens if our routine gets so sympathetic everyday until late at night? It makes imbalanced sympathetic and parasympathetic condition leading decreased quality of sleep, lowered healing ability, and lack of immunity. Difficulty in falling asleep at night and waking up in the morning is also a sign that you can see they don't switch properly.

We also have a wonderful function of adaptation to the environmental changes, still we have to understand the process of adaptation like catching the environmental alteration and the information sends through the nerve to the brain and it comprehended, then the brain response and sends the signals to the areas to make the functions properly. It happens to the every single moment so we can get used to the changes eventually.

So we also have to understand it takes time for us to get used to the things, and take care of ourselves good.

I hope we all can enjoy the real beauty of the environmental changes positively! YES!!
